Webflow shipped real-time collaboration for **Page Branching** on July 25, and if you've ever waited for a teammate to finish editing a page before you could start your changes, you'll understand why this matters.

The update is deceptively simple: multiple people can now view and edit the same page branch at the same time. No check-out system. No merging someone else's changes by hand afterwards. No "hey, are you still in the homepage branch?" Slack messages. Just a shared canvas with live cursors and simultaneous editing.

But the real story here isn't the collaboration feature. It's what real-time branching enables when you add AI agents to the mix.

What actually shipped

Let's be precise about what changed. Page Branching already existed in Webflow — it's an Enterprise plan feature that creates isolated copies of any page where designers can experiment without touching the live site. You branch a page, make changes, merge back when ready. Branches get their own staging subdomain for QA, so you can test custom code, third-party integrations, and responsive behaviour in a production-like environment before anything goes near your users.

Before July 25, branches were single-user. One person at a time. The workflow for a design team was: branch the page, make changes, merge, inform the next person, repeat. Fine for sequential work. Terrible for collaboration.

The update removes that bottleneck. Now an entire team can jump into the same branch simultaneously. A designer adjusts layout. A copywriter edits CMS-bound text. A developer tweaks custom code embeds. All in the same branch, all seeing each other's changes in real time.

Two constraints are worth knowing upfront: merging a branch overwrites the original page with no undo, and any comments on a branch are permanently deleted upon merge. If you're using branches for client review rounds, capture feedback externally before merging. Those constraints haven't changed with the update.

Why real-time branching changes the AI equation

Here's where it gets interesting. Real-time branching means AI agents and human designers can work on the same canvas simultaneously. That's not a hypothetical — it's the logical next step after MCP 2.0.

Webflow shipped MCP 2.0 on July 21, giving AI agents governed access to design systems, CMS collections, and analytics. Four days later, they shipped real-time collaboration on branches. Coincidence? Probably, in the sense that different teams ship on different schedules. But the combination is powerful.

Imagine this workflow: you branch a product page for a seasonal redesign. You start adjusting the hero layout. Meanwhile, an AI agent connected through MCP 2.0 begins updating CMS product descriptions with new seasonal copy, checking against your brand voice guidelines. Another agent pulls analytics data and flags sections with declining engagement. You see the CMS updates appearing in real time on the branch. You adjust the hero image to match the new copy tone. The agent notices the layout change and suggests a CTA variant with better performance data.

That's not a million miles from what's technically possible today. The pieces are all there. MCP 2.0 provides the agent access layer. Page Branching provides the isolated workspace. Real-time collaboration provides the shared canvas. The agents just need to be pointed at the same branch.

The collaborative building model no one is talking about

I think we're moving toward a model of software creation that doesn't have a clean name yet. It's not "no-code" (humans still configure things). It's not "AI-generated" (humans still design and decide). It's collaborative human-AI building on a shared canvas, with both parties operating in real time.

This model solves several problems that pure AI generation creates. AI-only site builders produce generic output. They don't understand brand nuance or business context. Human-only building is slow and expensive. The hybrid model — where AI handles the repetitive, data-driven work while humans handle taste, strategy, and quality control — seems like the stable equilibrium.

Webflow's architecture is well-suited to this model. Branches isolate experimentation from production. Real-time collaboration lets humans and agents share the workspace. MCP provides governed access so agents can't run amok. It's more coherent than bolting AI onto an existing CMS — it's designing the platform with the assumption that both humans and agents will be users.

What's still missing

I don't want to overstate where things are. MCP 2.0 is new, and the agent behaviours that make the collaborative scenario work are still being built. There's no off-the-shelf "Webflow design agent" you can install today that participates in real-time branching sessions. The plumbing exists. The applications are catching up.

There's also the question of non-Enterprise access. Page Branching — and therefore real-time collaboration on branches — is limited to Enterprise plans and Enterprise Partners. That makes sense as a go-to-market move (Enterprise customers have the most complex collaboration needs) but it also means the bulk of Webflow's user base won't experience the human-AI collaborative future firsthand until these features trickle down or get repackaged.

The comment-on-merge deletion is a real annoyance. It means branches are better suited for rapid iteration than client approval workflows. If your process is "design in branch, send to client for comments, merge," the real-time update doesn't change the underlying problem that comments evaporate on merge. You still need an external feedback loop.

The takeaway

Real-time collaboration on Page Branching is a quality-of-life improvement that happens to unlock something much bigger: the infrastructure for human-AI collaborative building on a shared canvas. The combination of MCP 2.0 (governed agent access) and real-time branching (shared workspace) makes Webflow one of the few platforms where you can picture both humans and AI agents working on the same design, in the same branch, at the same time.

The actual collaborative workflows are still being built. The agents aren't off-the-shelf yet. But the platform hasn't just left a door open for them — it's built the room.
