The EU Just Forced Google to Open Android to OpenAI and Anthropic — What That Means for No-Code Builders
The EU's DMA ruling forces Google to open 11 Android system features to competing AI assistants. Here's what that means for no-code builders — from more provider choice to lower API prices.

On Wednesday July 16, while half the tech press was still dissecting OpenAI's IPO delay, the European Commission dropped the biggest consumer AI regulation story of the year and almost nobody wrote the no-code angle.
Here's the short version: under the Digital Markets Act, the EU just ordered Google to open 11 Android system features to competing AI services. OpenAI. Anthropic. Anybody with an AI assistant that wants to play. Google also has to start sharing anonymised search data with rivals by January 2027.
If you build Android apps with Glide, FlutterFlow, Bubble, or ship PWAs to Android users, this changes what your app can do and who you pay to do it. Let me walk through why.

What did the EU actually order?
The binding measures, adopted July 16, target two things Google has been keeping to itself: Android's AI plumbing and its search data.
On the Android side, the 11 features being opened up include the microphone (for wake-word detection), camera access, whatever's on screen at any given moment, the notifications feed, calendar, location data, and app automation surfaces. Basically, everything Gemini can touch today, third-party AI assistants will be allowed to touch too. That means ChatGPT or Claude could become your phone's default assistant, wake up with a hotword, see your screen, read your notifications, book things in your calendar. The same system-level access Google reserved for itself since Assistant first shipped.
Most of these changes are tied to Android 18, with a compliance deadline of August 1, 2027. Concurrent wake-word support, so two separate assistants can both listen for different hotwords, follows with Android 19 by August 2028.
The search data piece is separate but equally important. Google must give rivals access to anonymised click-and-query data from Google Search, starting January 2027. That is the fuel those competitors need to train better models and improve their assistants' ability to surface useful answers from the web.
Teresa Ribera, the EU's competition chief, framed it plainly: "These measures ensure that Google cannot use its control over Android and Search to give its own AI services an unfair advantage." Google, predictably, says the changes "could endanger user privacy and security." They would say that.
What does this mean for no-code builders on Android?
I have been building and shipping apps on no-code platforms for years, and the Android experience has always carried a quiet asterisk: you are building inside Google's garden. That is fine when everything works, but it also meant Gemini was the only AI assistant that could really stretch its legs on Android. Everything else was a second-class citizen running inside a sandboxed app container.
That changes. Here is what gets interesting for no-code builders:
AI features stop being a Gemini-or-nothing decision. Right now, if you want deep OS integration for your Android app, you are building against Google's APIs and Google's models. Reading notifications, accessing the camera feed, responding to voice commands. That is fine if Gemini is your preferred provider, but pretty limiting if you want to use Claude for more nuanced reasoning or GPT for better structured output. After Android 18 compliance, your app's AI backend can be whatever you want, and it will still get first-class access to the same phone sensors and surfaces Gemini has.
The "Google tax" on AI features gets lighter. Not a literal tax. Just the pricing distortion where Google's own AI features benefit from zero-marginal-cost integration because they own the stack. When OpenAI and Anthropic can compete on equal footing at the OS level, the unit economics of adding AI to your Android app improve. More competition means cheaper API calls, more generous free tiers, and faster iteration. Nobody at OpenAI is going to be pricing their Android SDK the same way when they suddenly have system-level wake-word access.
No-code platforms get a bigger sandbox. Glide, FlutterFlow, Bubble. These platforms abstract away the OS layer, but they are still constrained by it. When Android opens system features to multiple AI providers, those platforms can build once and let their users choose the model. Want Claude for reasoning-heavy features? Fine. Prefer GPT for creative output? Also fine. The platform handles the integration, you pick the brain.
Is this really going to lower API prices?
The most immediate practical effect for no-code builders is pricing pressure. Google has been able to keep Gemini cheap partly because the marginal cost of integrating it into Android is near zero. They own both sides. Once ChatGPT and Claude are competing for the same OS-level access, you get a proper price war at the API layer.
We have already seen this playbook work. When the DMA forced Google to offer browser choice screens on Android, Firefox and others gained market share in Europe they never had before. When it forced Apple to adopt USB-C, the entire accessory market shifted in a single product cycle. The EU does not regulate gently, but when it regulates, things actually change.
I would not expect overnight price drops. But the direction is clear: making AI access a competition issue signals to every provider that gatekeeping at the OS level is not a viable long-term strategy. Builders get more choice and better prices, even if the full effect takes 18 to 24 months to materialise.
Does this change anything for PWAs?
Here is a subtler angle that matters for no-code builders specifically. Many no-code platforms ship Progressive Web Apps to Android. Not native APKs, but installable web apps that run through the browser engine. The DMA ruling is focused on native Android features, but the direction of travel is unmistakable: the EU views AI access as infrastructure, not a product differentiator.
If AI assistants become OS-level infrastructure that any provider can plug into, the gap between native and PWA AI features starts to close. A well-built PWA that calls Claude's Android SDK with system-level access is going to feel an awful lot like a native app. For no-code teams shipping on Glide or Bubble, that is a pretty big deal.
What should you do now?
Nothing changes tomorrow. But the horizon is clear enough to start making bets.
If you are building or planning an Android app with AI features, do not hard-code yourself to one AI provider. Architect for model switching now, even if it adds a bit of complexity today. The compliance timeline gives you 12 to 18 months before the OS-level changes land, which is exactly the kind of window where early movers get disproportionate advantage.
Also worth watching: this ruling is almost certainly going to be appealed and litigated. Google has deep pockets and a long history of dragging out DMA compliance. But the direction of travel is set. The EU has decided that AI access at the operating system level is a competition issue, and that framing will not be limited to Android. Apple is next.
The takeaway
The wall around Android's AI features just got a court-ordered demolition notice. You get more providers, lower costs, and better tools. The timeline is measured in years, not months, but it is not hypothetical. Google's OS-level AI monopoly on Android has an expiry date, and the countdown started on July 16.
