Amazon cut 16,000 corporate roles. Block (formerly Square) laid off more than 10% of its staff and name-checked AI as the reason. Coinbase did similar. **TechCrunch** maintains a running list of AI-attributed layoffs in 2026. It updates weekly. In 2025, companies directly cited AI in announcing 55,000 job cuts, more than 12 times the figure from the year before.
The pattern is no longer subtle. AI infrastructure costs billions. That money has to come from somewhere. It comes from people.
## What happens to the workers who are left?
This is the question I keep coming back to. Because the brutal truth is that most of these companies are not shrinking their ambitions. Oracle's $553 billion backlog isn't going to deliver itself. Microsoft still has enterprise customers to serve. Meta still needs to ship products.
What changes is the ratio: fewer people, same (or greater) output expectations.
The remaining workforce (the 82% who survived Oracle's cuts, the 98% who made it through Microsoft's) now face a fundamentally different job. They're not just doing their old roles with fewer colleagues. They're expected to operate at a velocity that matches the infrastructure their former colleagues' salaries helped fund.
AI tools will fill some gaps. But AI tools managed by overstretched, anxious teams operating on survival instinct don't produce great results. They produce burnout, then mistakes, then attrition.

Oracle didn't treat this as a painful strategic shift. It treated it as an operational expense adjustment. That callousness will echo. The people who stayed remember how the people who left were treated.
The strategic bet might pay off. The Stargate infrastructure might make Oracle the backbone of enterprise AI. But the way you execute a layoff *is* the strategy. It tells your remaining workforce exactly what you think they're worth.
