The old deal was simple: memorise algorithms, practise on a whiteboard, hope your anxiety doesn't choke you when the interviewer asks you to invert a binary tree. The new deal, if you're applying to Meta in 2026, is different. You open CoderPad, get a multi-file project, and use whatever AI model you fancy to help you ship it. GPT-5. Claude Sonnet. Gemini. Llama. They're all there, in a sidebar, waiting.
Meta has quietly made AI-assisted coding interviews the norm. One of the two technical rounds at onsite has been replaced wholesale. The policy began as a pilot in October 2025 and has expanded through 2026 to cover backend, ops, and progressively more SWE roles. If you interview at Meta today, you will almost certainly be tested on how well you collaborate with AI, not on how well you've memorised sorting algorithms.
When a trillion-dollar company tells its hiring managers that AI-assisted coding is the standard we assess against, the debate ends. Tool-assisted development is professional development. There is no asterisk.
What exactly did Meta change?
The old Meta onsite had two algorithmic coding rounds. The new format keeps one traditional round and replaces the other with a 60-minute AI-enabled session in CoderPad. Candidates get a multi-file codebase with partially implemented features, failing tests, and bugs. They use an integrated AI assistant to understand the code, debug failures, generate solutions, and extend functionality.
Assessment now runs on four axes: Problem Solving (how you use AI to reason about hard problems), Technical Competency (correct, efficient code regardless of who or what wrote the initial draft), Verification (testing and debugging AI output), and Communication (explaining your decisions as you go). In other words: can you think, can you ship, can you check the AI's work, and can you talk like a human while doing it.
What does this mean for no-code builders?
For years, no-code builders have been told that their tools made them less legitimate. Bubble users are not "real developers." Webflow designers are not "real engineers." The gatekeeping has been relentless, and it has always been about the tools, not the output. Meta just said, at enormous scale and with enormous consequences, that the tools do not matter. What matters is whether you can solve the problem.
A no-code builder who uses Stacker to ship an internal tool in two days is demonstrating exactly the competency Meta now assesses: identify the problem, pick the right tool, verify the output, communicate the decisions. The fact that the tool is a visual builder rather than a code generator is a distinction without a difference.
The stigma around tool-assisted development is dying. It is not dying because the no-code community wrote enough blog posts. It is dying because the largest engineering organisations on earth have concluded that restricting tools is a worse hiring strategy than testing how people use them.
Is everyone else following?
Partly. Google announced a Gemini-assisted coding interview pilot in May 2026, targeting junior and mid-level SWE roles on select US teams. Amazon and Microsoft have not announced equivalent policies publicly. But both are investing aggressively in AI coding tools. It is hard to imagine either company maintaining a hiring process that bans the very tools they sell to developers.
The takeaway
The old world treated AI-assisted coding as a shortcut: something you did in private but never admitted to in an interview. Meta has made it the standard. The practical consequence is straightforward: if you are hiring engineers, your interview process should test AI collaboration, not syntax recall. If you are interviewing for engineering roles, you should practise solving real problems with AI, not grinding LeetCode. And if you are a no-code builder who has ever felt defensive about your tools, you can stop. The biggest tech company in the world just validated the entire philosophy.
Syntax memorisation was always a proxy for something more interesting. Meta finally stopped pretending otherwise.
